“Textures: Dakota Landscapes and Pottery” by Karla Nelson opens at the James Memorial Art Center May 1, 2013 and runs through May 30,2013. View her textural technique of painting in layers using a limited palette of colors including blues, browns, greens and yellows and inspired by old tintype photographs with scratches and tattered edges. Her pottery is hand-made from slabs of porcelain, impressed with different textures and reassembled into various shapes like bowls and vases. Gallery hours are 12:30 p.m. – 5:00 on Tuesday and Thursday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 1 – 5 p.m. on Sunday. There is no admission charge. 55 young ladies from across North Dakota will be competing for the titles of Little Miss North Dakota, Pre-Teen Miss North Dakota, Junior Teen Miss North Dakota, and North Dakota's Outstanding Teen on June 1, 2013. It’s the 20th Anniversary of the Youth Pageant and former winners will be celebrated! Two pageants will be held that day – 2:00 p.m. for Little Miss and Pre-Teen age divisions and at 7:00 p.m. for the Junior Teen and Outstanding Teen division. The pageants will be held at the Williston High School auditorium. Tickets will be available at the door. The recipient of the Outstanding Teen Title will go on to represent North Dakota at the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant in Orlando, Florida in August.
